New fashion range from Jax Styler

An up-and-coming fashion designer from South Tyneside is celebrating the launch of her first clothing range. Jax Styler, of Marsden, South Shields, won the Gazette’s new business competition – the If We Can, You Can Challenge – in 2011, and has spent more than a year putting together her final designs. Now, the 26-year-old has launched her own website,

The former Harton Comprehensive School pupil, who has teamed up with a manufacturer in Portugal, said: “The clothes look great and it’s so good to see my designs in real life, because I’ve spent so long making sure I get them right. Finding a factory in a different country that I could work with and trust was a very long and hard process, but seeing my clothes in real life is very rewarding.”

Jax also received funding from The Prince’s Trust. She added: “I wanted to go for quite an alternative look, and I’ve gone for sort of 60s-style prints for my T-shirts and jumpers. The collection is quite small at the moment, but I’m going to branch out and do things like footwear and jackets. I can’t say which one it is yet, but I’m working with a well-known national retailer to create an exclusive collection.” She added: “I think that will be the big moment for me, walking into a shop and seeing my clothes on the rails – that would be amazing.”

Jax is now working on expanding her clothing range. She said: “I’m going to a trade fair in Coventry in a couple of weeks’ time. It’s a massive fair, where retailers come from all over the world. Things are really moving forward and it’s exciting, but I still feel like I’ve got a lot to do. “People who know me know how long and hard I’ve been working on this, and I am very pleased with what I’ve done so far, but there’s still a lot I want to do.”  To see Jax’s designs, go to her website
